Lymph nodes are one of the important parts of our immune system which acts as a node between the lymphatic vessels. These nodes are the filtering system of the body that is effective in trapping the viruses, bacteria as well as other harmful pathogens. These nodes are present on different parts of the body including neck, groin, pelvis, armpit etc. Lymph nodes are very important for the body especially for the normal functioning of the body. They are small and bean shaped but when the cells present in them start to grow rapidly it gives rise to benign growth also known as Castleman Tumor. In this article we are going to discuss it more in detail along with its herbal medicine.


Castleman Tumor is a rare disorder that especially affects the lymph nodes and involves the rapid growth of cells as well as the tissues related to it. It can be seen anywhere in the body depending on the site of the node. It was first known as lymph node disorder which was discovered by Dr.Benjamin Castleman in the year 1950. There are also other names given to the Castleman tumor including Angiofollicular ganglionic hyperplasia, Angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia and many more. It is not cancerous but there are some chances that it might become malignant.There are two types of Castleman tumors including:-

  • Unicentric Castleman Tumor : It is one of the common type of disease which commonly affects the adults between the ages of 20s to 30s. In this condition the cells grow only one of the lymph nodes making the area enlarge and is especially seen in the abdomen or chest.

  • Multicentric Castleman Tumor : It is a serious type of tumor which is seen in people between the ages of 40 to 60 years. This affects the multiple lymph nodes of the body and causes enlargement.


Patients diagnosed with Unicentric Castleman Tumor do not show any symptoms at the early stages of the disease. Here are some of the common clinical features of the disease including :-

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fever

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Skin rashes

  • Spots on the skin that appears red

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Enlarged liver or spleen

  • Bruising or bleeding easily


The exact cause for the development of disease is not known but there are some of the risk factors leading to disease including :-

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

  • Human herpesvirus type 8 (HVV-8)

  • Inflammation

  • Weak immune system

  • Acquired Genetic mutations


Multicentric castleman disease might lead to life-threatening infection resulting in organ failure. People who suffer from HIV/AIDS are more at risk and at high risk of developing lymphoma.

According to Allopaths the treatment for Castleman tumor is given on the basis of signs and symptoms of the disease. The common treatment given for the castleman tumor are Immunotherapy, corticosteroid or chemotherapy. At the end they might also suggest the surgical method and there are chances that it might develop again.
