MANAGEMENT OF STOMACH CANCER THROUGH AYURVEDA – ALTERNATE REMEDIES

ABSTRACT

Stomach cancer which is also known as gastric cancer is an abnormal and controlled growth of the cells in the stomach. In most of the cases of stomach cancer, the growth is found in the stomach, i.e. the main part of the stomach. Gradually, just like other cancers, it also spreads to other parts of the body if left undiagnosed or untreated. This article is all about stomach cancer and its herbal management by the remedies offered by Plantbased Ayurveda.

INTRODUCTION

This muscular sac called the stomach is located below the ribs and in the upper middle part of the abdomen. As most of us know that the function of the stomach is to receive food and aid its digestive process through various juices and enzymes. Formation of cancerous cells in the inner lining of the stomach results in stomach cancer. These cells gradually over the years grow into a tumor.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

It is very important to know about signs and symptoms of any disease in order to diagnose it at an early stage and in case of cancers it is crucial to be diagnosed as soon as possible.

SOME OF THE COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS REPORTED ARE

  • Swallowing is difficult

  • Bloating sensation after eating anything

  • Heartburn and indigestion

  • Small meals make me feel full

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Pain in stomach

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Loss of appetite

CAUSES

The exact cause of stomach cancer is not known. However there are certain factors which increase the risk of having it. Some of the risk factors are:

  • Infection of H.pylori resulting in ulceration in the stomach

  • Gastritis, i.e. inflammation of the stomach

  • Pernicious anemia, which is a chronic form of anemia

  • Polyps in stomach

  • Smoking

  • Obesity or being overweight

  • Surgery of stomach to treat an ulcer

  • Taking too much pickled, smoked or salty food

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease

  • Family history of the disease

  • Exposure to asbestos

  • Certain genetic factors

  • Epstein-Barr virus infection

  • Having A-type blood group

Any of these factors can result in certain abnormal changes in the DNA which causes cells in the stomach to divide rapidly and uncontrollably. This causes piling up of the cells in a particular area, forming a tumor and destroying healthy tissues. Gradually this tumor can break from its site and travel to other parts of the body to develop over there (Metastasis).

DIAGNOSIS

Your doctor will start with the physical examination and medical history which will help them understand if there is any risk factor, family history or signs and symptoms present. In case of presence of any of these things, further tests are done to confirm the diagnosis like:

  • Certain blood tests

  • Upper endoscopy

  • Upper gastrointestinal series test

  • CT (Computed tomography) test

  • Biopsy
