Flatulence

Flatulence is the state of having excessive stomach or intestinal gas which results in uncomfortable feelings of bloating or passing of gas from the rectum. Most people pass gas many times a day. Flatulence is not life-threatening, but can definitely cause social embarrassment. Gas or flatus has five odorless components, namely nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and oxygen. Flatulence or excess gas in the digestive tract can come from increased intake of air swallowed. But mostly increased production of gas is due to certain undigested foods broken down by harmless bacteria inside the colon. Carbohydrates can cause more gas as compared to fats and proteins. Lactase deficiency is another source of flatulence which results in a decreased ability to digest lactose. Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk and other dairy products such as cheese and ice cream etc.

Flatulence can also occur from gas seeping into the intestine from blood. It is reported that intestine produces 500 to 2,000 mls. of gas which is passed out of the anus at regular intervals. In other words, flatulence is the act of passing intestinal gas from the anus. Some other common causes of the flatulence are normal physical needs, habitual air swallowing, old colic, gallbladder disease, colon cancer, diverticulosis, peptic ulcer, gallstones and food allergies.

Most cases of excessive flatulence are not serious and can be treated using simple methods. The symptoms of flatulence are usually considered troublesome if there are frequent episodes of flatulence and an excessive amount of gas passed during an episode of flatulence. Every person at some time or another gets gases and disturbances in the colon. We are all vulnerable to this condition for several reasons. First, the colon is the main seat of vata dosha, the dosha that is derived from ether and air. If vata increases in the colon, due to eating vata-aggravating foods, cold weather, anxiety, insomnia, and other factors, gases may build up. Also, whenever we eat anything, we swallow a small amount of air, which increases vata. And any food we eat undergoes slight fermentation, which produces gases.
