Prolactinoma is one of a common hormone producing tumor that occurs in the pituitary gland of the body. The main reason behind this health problem is - decreased level of sex hormones in an individual. Women suffer due to low levels of estrogen while in men the problem occurs mainly due to low level of testosterone.

What Happens In Prolactinoma?

In this health problem, a non-cancerous tumor of the pituitary gland, also known as adenoma, leads to the overproduction of prolactin hormone in our brain. The disease is usually not a life threatening one, but is responsible for several complications. It may cause vision problems as well as cause infertility problems and several other health issues.

​The exact cause of this pituitary gland disorder is not known. But, it is believed, it may be caused by medications. It may result from other type of tumor in the pituitary gland as well. An improper functioning of the thyroid gland is another main cause of this disorder. An injury to the chest may also be the reason for the same. In females, pregnancy as well as breastfeeding may lead to this disorder.

How Can Prolactinoma Be Diagnosed?

After considering the symptoms, your doctor may confirm the disease by recommending some tests. The tests include simple blood tests, MRI scan of brain as well as a simple vision test.
