It is well said the good mental health helps us to enjoy life in an appropriate way. Today's life style, hectic schedule and pressure of society are responsible for mental disorders.

Ayurveda And Mental Health

Ayurveda describes the mental health as a state of mental, spiritual and intellectual wellbeing. Ayurveda is a holistic approach for the treatment of diseases that helps to integrate the mind, body and soul. Bottom line of this article is psychosis which is also a mental disorder. Psychosis is characterized by hallucination in vision, hearing, smelling and tasting etc.


Psychosis is a mental disorder which is characterized by the impaired relationship with reality. People who are suffering from psychosis may have self deceptions and hallucinations. These sensory experiences are the result of absence of actual stimulus. People usually have hallucinations like they may hear that someone is yelling at them even when people are not around them. Sometimes they may have the visual hallucinations like they see someone in front of them when person is actually not there.

Symptoms Of Psychosis

  • Depression.

  • Anxiety

  • Lack of concentration.

  • Cut off from family and friends.

  • Hallucinations.

  • Suicidal thoughts.

  • Sleeping problems like sleeping too much or sometimes waking up all the night.

  • Lack of spontaneity.

  • Disorganized speech like answering the question that does not make any sense or slipping off topics.

  • Behaviour problem like wearing odd clothes which are not according to weather.

  • Problems in performing daily activities like cooking or self care.

Note - It is mandatory to see a doctor if one is experiencing these symptoms.

Causes Associated With Psychosis

  • Brain diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and some chromosomal disorders are the causes of psychosis.

  • Brain tumors.

  • Infection which attack the brain like syphilis and HIV.

  • Stroke.

  • Certain type of epilepsy.

Cause Of Psychosis In Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, there are three energies vata, pitta and kapha which are responsible for a healthy body. Imbalance in any of three energies results in the health complications. Psychosis occurs due to imbalance of psychic energies - sattva, raja and tama in connection with imbalance of physical energies which are vata, pitta and kapha. Psychosis is the result of delusions, indulgence of negative emotions like anger and hatred. Psychosis is called Unmad in Ayurveda.

There are various herbs present in Ayurveda like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Mulethi (Glycerrhiza glabra),Vacha (Acorus calamus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Ajmoda (Carum roxburghianum), Shwet jeerak (Cuminum cyminum), Krishna jeerak (Carum carvi),Sonth (Zingiber officinale), Marich (Piper nigrum), Pipali (Piper longum) and Patha (Cissampelos pareira) which are quite beneficial to manage the problem of psychosis and supports the good brain health.
