What is the stiffness of joints?


The term stiffness of joints refers to any pain and discomfort while moving the joints. It is usually seen after a gap of time or inactivity of the joint. When moving is a person feels pain and discomfort around the area of his joints it may be due to inflammation in and around the joint connecting the bones in that area. This inflammation in the ligaments of the joints may be the cause of stiffness and pain.


What are the causes of stiffness in joints?


The stiffness of any joint in the body is caused by the inflammation of the synovial fluid or the fluid lining the joint. This inflammation causes redness, swelling, pain and stiffness around the joint. Any movement involving that area would lead to pain and discomfort. Joint stiffness may also be itself a sign of some underlying medical disease like cancer of the bones, joint trauma, arthritis, or bone deformity.


What are the effects of stiffness in joints?


The usual symptoms resented by patients with stiffness are pain, discomfort, swelling, fluid retention, and deformity of bone.
