Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person has repeated seizures or convulsions. These seizures are episodes of disturbed brain activity. Epilepsy occurs when permanent changes in brain tissue cause the brain to be too excitable and sends out abnormal signals. According to reports, epilepsy may be due to a medical condition or injury that affects the brain. The cause of epilepsy includes stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain infections (brain abscess, meningitis, encephalitis and AIDS), brain tumor etc. Brain problems that are present at birth or brain injury that occurs during birth may cause symptoms of epilepsy. Epilepsy can also be due to abnormal blood vessels in the brain and other diseases that damage or destroy brain tissue. Scientific research indicates that convulsions on account of epilepsy usually begin between the age group 5-20, but it can happen at any age. There may be a family history of epilepsy.

Epilepsy as no physical manifestations of its existence, thus making the epilepsy symptoms in adult peoplehard to spot. The problem with epilepsy is the fact that there are a number of versions of the condition. Epilepsy can originate from any section of the brain and might even result to being a combination of seizures in adults. The symptoms of epilepsy mostly depend on the section of the brain affected. Repeated seizures are the general symptom of the epilepsy disorder.

The symptoms of epilepsy may include 'blackouts' or periods of confused memory, episodes of periods of unresponsiveness, involuntary movement of arms and legs, faintness, excessive fatigue etc. Some patients complain of odd sounds, distorted perceptions and episodic feelings of fear. The treatment of epilepsy depends on the conditions and symptoms in the patient.

The seizures due to epilepsy can occur or recur after a long gap of time. Some cases of seizure may last longer. However, epilepsy is a treatable disorder. Seizures in some of the patients with epilepsy can be treated and controlled using anti-epileptic drugs. But some anti-epileptic drugs are highly expensive and out of reach of common people. Patients in whom the seizures are poorly controlled need surgical treatment for their epilepsy. Epilepsy surgery in carefully selected patients can cure epilepsy, but it can lead to other related complications.

Ayurveda considers herbal medicine as an area of basic safety and efficacy in the treatment of epilepsy. The active chemical constituents and mechanisms of action have been identified in various herbal medicines. Numerous herbal supplements have effects in the central nervous system and thus have the theoretical potential for affecting seizures in patients with epilepsy and interacting with some other anti-epileptic medications.

Treatment of epilepsy through ayurveda proves to be beneficial. In Ayurveda, epilepsy is termed as 'Apasmara' or 'apasmaram'. Epilepsy can be due to stressful or lazy life, poor diet and suppression of natural urges. As per ayurveda, epilepsy is a vata disorder. It can also be caused by vitiation of pitta or kapha. Ayurveda suggests nerve tonic herbs like Aswagandha (Withania somnifera), Brahmi (Bacopa monniera), Jatamamsi (Nordastachys jatamansi) etc. to soothe nervous system and to reduce instances of abnormal brain functioning.
